Chiropractic
In the course of our lifestyle there are many potential problems that can occur. Sitting or standing with a poor posture, falls and bumps in sports, repetitive strain involved in redundant tasks, car accidents, work injuries, childbirth are all but a few of the potential activities that can effect our health. When these injuries occur they can cause the joints of our spine, hips or limbs to become misaligned. These misalignments can cause these joints to be irritated and inflamed, they fail to move properly, are weak, and can also hurt surrounding tissues and nerves.
Chiropractic is the science, art, and philosophy, that has been around for over a century, concerning the detection and correction of joint misalignments and problems they cause. The science is the how in finding the problem, this is the role of consultation, examination and x-rays (if necessary). The art is the skill involved in the treatment to correct the problem. The philosophy is the why we fix the problem this way, without the use of toxic drugs or dangerous surgery.
The correction for the joint misalignment is done with a Chiropractic adjustment, which is a gentle application of specific pressure to accurately guide the joint back into its natural position and function. Only a proficiently trained Chiropractor can perform these adjustments and when needed there is no substitute for it. The adjustment does not hurt and can be quite a relief, it is much safer then any drug or surgical treatment. It can help children, older seniors, or pregnant women, all types of patients can benefit.
Correction can be instant or take months of treatment depending on many factors:
- severity of the condition
- how many problems involved in condition
- how old the injury is
- the health and age of the patient
- history of surgery
Examples of conditions effectively treated by Chiropractic:
- Back problems
- Neck problems
- Hip and Pelvic problems
- Migraine and Tension Headaches
- Disc problems
- Nerve problems down limbs
- Sciatica
- General stiffness and soreness
Active Release Technique (ART)
Dr. Michael Lealiy, a Chiropractor, astrophysicist, and former "Top Gun" fighter pilot developed ART in the early 1980's. He observed when people are involved in repetitive type of activities such as typing, lifting, working with tools, sports or posture; they can develop a myriad of chronic injuries. Carpal tunnel syndrome, tennis or golfer's elbow, rotator cuff injury, swimmer's shoulder, migraines, TMJ, spinal problems, runner's knee, foot plantar fascitis, are but a few chronic types of disorders that can come from repetitive injury. He found that these injuries develop because of the formation of scar tissue.
When an injury occurs involving soft tissue (non-bone), your body in response lays down scar tissue to protect and stabilize the injury. This is the same as when calluses form on a workman's hands for example; At first the skin on his hands is soft and flexible, but after repetitive injury to the skin while working with picks and shovels, the skin on his hands cracks, bleeds and then forms a callous. This callus is scar tissue, it is a protective barrier but its type of tissue is tight, coarse and hard. It has lost its flexibility and suppleness. These are the exact same changes that can happen to other areas of soft tissue that are exposed to repeated injury. Someone who is a typist for example, cause small but repeated injury to the muscles of the wrists and forearms day after day, Overtime this injury causes callous formation in these muscles and causes them to be tight, short, hard and weak, This tightness can squeeze a nerve and cause pain and numbness to travel down their arm, resulting in carpal tunnel syndrome.
This is an example but can occur anywhere in the body expose to repeated injury; elbows, shoulders, neck, back, knees and feet. A credentialed ART provider uses their hands to break up this scar tissue, allowing it to be reabsorbed, free the tissue and fixing the condition. This is far better approach then the traditional one using anti-inflammatory and pain killing drugs. Tolerating their side effects and dangers without ever curing the cause of the problems. Massage, heat, stretching, exercise are useful, but on their own the benefits are only temporary.
ART treatment can sting but is always done within the tolerance of the patient, The correction can be instant or take several treatments depending on many factors; the severity of the condition, how many problems involved in condition, how old the injury is, the health and age of the patient, and history of surgery.
Examples of conditions treated by ART:
- Whiplash and neck injuries
- Hand, Wrist, Elbow and Shoulder problems
- Carpal tunnel syndrome
- De Quervains's syndrome
- Golfer and tennis elbow
- Rotator cuff injury
- Frozen shoulder
- Headaches, both tension and chronic migraine
- Spinal pain, stiffness and weakness
- Hip and Buttock pain
- Chronic muscle strains tendentious
- Runner's knee and foot plantar fascitis
- TMJ jaw disorders, clicking, tightness or pain.
Massage Therapy
Clinical massage therapy is the application of a variety of massage techniques for solving a range of muscular problems. These problems can involve soreness, spasm, tension, stiffness and pain. Massage works by relaxing these painful muscles while increasing circulation, and Stimulate lymphatic drainage. These disorders can result from stress, poor posture, whiplash, sports injury or strain.
Examples of treatment:
- Trigger point
- Accupressure
- Cross-friction
- Swedish, deep-tissue and relaxation.
